FUHRMANN Engineering Inc. (FEI) provided engineering design services on site plans for a new private student housing complex at the Urbana-Champaign campus.
The two (2) buildings have been constructed along University Avenue. Each building is 6 stories tall with 300 units that can house over 500 students. A combination of 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom units are available. Both buildings were designed with first floor amenities, including restaurants, retail tenants, and office tenants. The combined building and parking lot area is three city blocks, with a final price tag of $85 million dollars.
FEI’s role was providing civil engineering services, including site and geometric layout, grading, drainage design, utility coordination, and procuring necessary permits required for the site area. Parking areas used open cell brick pavers along the alley(s). Best management practices for storm runoff used a “green” roof system to capture rain at both buildings and a rainforest concept at the front entrance of the main building.
